Mrs. Milburn's diaries : an Englishwoman's day-to-day reflections, 1939-45
Published in Unknown Binding by Harrap ()

Great memories
The book is an absolute delight. It brought back memories for me; and I am sure will teach others born way after WW2 how it was.

She writes of son, who becomes a prisoner of war; of her efforts to help her country; her constant stream of family and friends who come to visit. She writes with humor and love. You get a real feel of being there; or hearing the bombing at night, seeing the devastation. And, of course, sharing that cup of tea in her garden. Very warm.

There are tears of joy as well as tears of sorrow.

A wonferful read.

My Best Friend (Personalized Edition)

Treasured gift and fun to read!
The personalized books are a wonderful idea as they allow you to create a very unique gift. This particular story is very appealing to my son. It was given to him when he was three. At that time he was excited to see his name and other familiar names (his friends, his hometown, etc.) in the story. The story line is easy to follow and amusing, but is probably more appropriate for 4 to 5 year-olds and up. Just recently, my son, now 8, selected that book to read at bed time. When we were finished he sincerely told me that book is one of the best presents he has ever gotten.

My Cat's Tale
This book is excellent. I love the idea of keeping all of my cat's favorite moments in hands reach. I had so much fun filling out this book and I continue to add new things to it. I loved putting my cat's paw prints in it. Now I am buying one for my other kitten.

Fun, insightful, valuable, touching
Of all the birthday presents I got last month, this was my favorite! I thought I knew how to take care of a dog -- how hard could it be? Little did I know! The distilled training and medical advice has been really useful -- the book actually teaches you how to raise your dog, instead of just owning it. The book has loads of great tips and techniques that I had never thought of before. Frankie, my puppy, is already so well behaved that my friends are truly impressed. The best thing about the book though are the journal pages. They are a great way to make sure I capture the important moments in my new best friend's life as they happen. I'm definitely buying a few to give to the dog lovers on my Christmas list.

My Emily Dickinson
Published in Hardcover by North Atlantic Books (August, 1985)
Author: Susan Howe
Average review score:

If you think you know Emily...
This is a serious and personal literary study of Dickinson's work by a scholar and fellow poet who appreciates both the art and the attitude of one of her American literary forebears.

Howe points out how Dickinson's poetry has been overlooked in light of her character and biography. It seems that in the 19th century, it was remarkable for a woman to be a poet at all, let alone write original, rebellious, and quite modern poetry. Hence, the work itself, though enjoyed by schoolchildren all over America, has been little understood.

Delving into Dickinson's reading lists, her notes and letters, and analyzing a few poems, Howe explores the workings of an intricate mind. She uncovers connections between Dickinson and the Brownings, the Brontes, and James Fenimore Cooper, and she shows how seemingly submissive, soft spoken poetic lines are actually rebellious and even at times angry. What Howe does not do is confuse the image of "The Belle of Amhearst" with the vital workings of the mind of this remarkable woman.

This book is an enjoyable read filled with Howe's admiration for her artistic predecessor and written in straightforward language, not literary jargon--a tribute from one poet to another. For anyone who enjoys Emily Dickinson's poetry, it is not to be missed.

New Families, New Finances: Money Skills for Today's Nontraditional Families
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (03 April, 1998)
Authors: Emily W. Card and Christie Watts Kelly

If your family is different, this book is for you.
Many of the non-traditional families in our society feel left out then it comes to money books. Most of us aren't in the 10% or so of families with a father working and a mother at home. This book gives tax info and other good advice for this kind of family--the one with two earners, blended families, even same sex families.

I liked the charts which summarized the info for each family type, with specific details on what to do.

Education and Teaching
As a former student of Emily Hicks, I can attest to her appeal as an author and a thinker. She explores in this book the notions of teaching in a non-biased, open framework. The book incorporates theory and real world practicum. This is especially helpful for teachers in So. Cal., Texas, and other border areas.
